With the release of “Alien: Romulus” in cinemas, player counts for 2014’s well-reviewed video game “Alien: Isolation” are spiking.
‘Romulus’ director Fede Alvarez has cited this specific game as a big influence on the film which is similarly set between the events of “Alien” and “Aliens” and has pulled in over $100 million worldwide at the box-office.
Now, Steam Charts has indicated the concurrent player count for the title in the past two weeks has seen peak spikes of 5-6 times the average of the rest of the year before it. The game has achieved the most active players it has seen since April 2020.
In comparison, other less well-regarded game titles in the franchise, including “Aliens: Dark Descent,” “Aliens: Fireteam Elite,” and “Aliens: Colonial Marines,” have seen player counts double on Steam in recent weeks.
One thing helping push up the game’s success is that the title is seeing a 70-80% discount right now across PlayStation, PC and Xbox, with the title below $10 or $15 in almost all markets – though that discount is expected to go away soon.
“Alien: Isolation” takes place 15 years after “Alien” and follows engineer Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen, as she investigates the disappearance of her mother aboard the space station Sevastopol.
She discovers the station has fallen into disarray due to an alien creature on the loose and must find a way to escape. The game put the emphasis on stealth and survival as opposed to action with only one xenomorph in play – albeit an AI-driven killing machine that can appear almost anywhere.
