In April came the news that Microsoft was shutting down four Bethesda game development studios.
Tango Gameworks (“The Evil Within,” “Ghostwire: Tokyo”), Arkane Austin (“Redfall,” “Prey”), Alpha Dog (“Mighty Doom,” “Wraithborne”) and support studio Roundhouse Games all are undergoing the chop.
Of the four, the biggest surprise was Tango, which was just coming off the success of “Hi-Fi Rush” – a title that had scored much acclaim among critics. It was also the first Japanese studio in Microsoft Gaming’s development portfolio.
By June, Microsoft had officially closed the studio….until this weekend when news broke that South Korean publisher Krafton (“PUBG,” “The Callisto Protocol”) has reached an agreement to acquire the studio from Microsoft for an undisclosed amount.
In a statement, the publisher says: “Krafton Inc today welcomed the talented people of Tango Gameworks to their team, marking an exciting moment in the company’s global expansion and its first significant investment in the Japanese video game market.
The acquisition will also reportedly include the rights to “Hi-Fi Rush,” strongly suggesting future entries in the franchise.
