Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” has become only the second R-rated film to join the billion-dollar club worldwide.
The superhero sequel is set to finish this weekend with a $494.3 million domestic and $535.1 million international gross – taking it to a $1.03 billion gross at the global box office.
The film is well on track to overtake 2019’s “Joker” at $1.07 billion to become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.
It’s also only the second film to reach the $1 billion mark this year, alongside Pixar smash “Inside Out 2” at $1.56 billion.
The film marks the 31st Disney film and the 11th Marvel Cinematic Universe film to reach the $1 billion mark – and only the second MCU film to reach that marker post-“Endgame” (the other being “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021).
It comes as the film’s $54.2 million third weekend domestic haul was seriously challenged by Blake Lively’s new film “It Ends with Us” which hauled in $50 million domestically and a further $30 million internationally.
No challenge was the “Borderlands” film adaptation which is ending the weekend in fourth place with $8.8 million domestically and $7.7 million internationally – a disastrous result considering it cost $115 million to make and a further $30 million to market.
