Canada’s VVS Films has released the first trailer for Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, the real crime thriller “Woman of the Hour”.
The project is based on the stranger-than-fiction true story of Rodney Alcala and Cheryl Bradshaw. She was a bachelorette on the hit 1970s TV matchmaking show “The Dating Game” and chose the charming bachelor number three, Rodney Alcala in her episode.
However, she was unaware of his deadly secret – beneath Alcala’s charming facade was a psychopathic rapist and serial killer who was in the midst of his macabre spree when he went on the show.
The pair won a vacation together in Southern California but Bradshaw, turned off by his ‘weird vibes’ after the taping, declined his date and only later found out how close she came to death.
Kendrick plays Bradshaw in the film alongside Daniel Zovatto as Alcala, Tony Hale as “The Dating Game” host Jim Lange, along with Kelley Jakle, Max Lloyd-Jones, Jedidiah Goodacre, Matt Visser, Taylor Hastings, Nicolette Robinson and Dylan Schmid.
Ian MacAllister McDonald penned the script for the film which is said to balance thriller with elements of black comedy and scored good reviews out of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival where it premiered.
Netflix acquired the U.S. rights to the film in an $11 million deal during the fest but has yet to set a date for the film’s release.
Various other distributors acquired it for overseas theatrical release including VVS Films in Canada, Roadshow in Australia and New Zealand, Signature Entertainment in the UK, and Lionsgate in India.
