Having directed the original 1979 “Alien,” 2012’s “Prometheus” and 2017’s “Alien: Covenant,” filmmaker Ridley Scott has stepped back to producing only for the upcoming “Alien: Romulus”.
“Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead” helmer Fede Alvarez directs the new film and in a new interview with The Los Angeles Times, Scott spoke about the extent of his involvement.
He says Alvarez’s first draft came in long and the two worked together to tighten it up:
“Fede is a surge of energy, and I had to step back and let him do it … Fede had a blueprint firm in his mind, and his script was pretty clear. It was also long, but the screenplay is always long. And so we got into that a little bit.”
Alvarez would then contact Scott as development hit expected points, but Scott says he did not meddle with the new director’s work as he hates backseat filmmakers:
“It is hard work with anybody and their mother giving you advice — the last thing you want at a certain point is advice. I do not need advice. If I fall on my own sword and therefore lie bleeding, I say, ‘It was my fault.’
I hope Fede’s got another one up his sleeve because I think this is going to do really well. He’s got a streak of brilliance.”
He may get his wish. Not only is the film heading for a big box-office opening, but reactions on social media from early screenings on Thursday night went online yesterday with raves across the board.
Said reviews seem to dub it the best entry in years and, in particular, the film’s third act is scoring high praise.
“Alien: Romulus” opens in cinemas this coming Friday.
