Oscar-winning “Gravity” “Y Tu Mama Tambien” and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón has revealed he wants to make a horror film.
Participating in a masterclass at the Locarno Film Festival where he was also receiving a lifetime achievement award, the Mexican filmmaker says he “loves horror movies” and “my aspiration is to one day do a horror film”.
In fact, he has been “flirting” with a script he has written for the genre. He adds his approach is less the fantastical like his good friend and collaborator Guillermo del Toro, and more grounded – citing Polanski’s “The Tenant” and “Rosemary’s Baby” as big influences on him.
The closest the filmmaker has come to the genre is the dystopian yet grounded sci-fi thriller “Children of Men” which, though acclaimed, was a commercial flop and led to the creation of the more commercially appealing “Gravity”.
Cuarón returns after a six year absence with “Disclaimer,” the new Apple TV+ series starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline that will launch October 11th. He’s also rumored to be filming his next film “Billy Please Call Home” which is based on a script he wrote two decades ago.
The comments also come as both Christopher Nolan and the Coens have teased potential forays into the horror genre.
