Disney Pictures has premiered the second trailer for “Mufasa: The Lion King,” the upcoming musical drama hailing from “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins.

The film is a prequel to 2019’s live-action styled photorealistic animated feature “The Lion King” which itself was a remake of the original Disney animated 1994 film of the same name.

The movie will follow the rise of one of Pride Lands’ greatest kings. The action returns to the savannah where Rafiki tells Kiara – Simba and Nala’s daughter – the story of her grandfather, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their commentary along the way.

Aaron Pierre takes over the role famously inhabited by James Earl Jones as it explores Mufasa’s younger days and the breakdown of his relationship with his brother Taka (later ‘Scar’).

The film boasts several returnees with Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen reprising their roles as Timon and Pumba, John Kani returns as Rafiko, Donald Glover is back as Simba, and Beyonce is back as Nana. Kelvin Harrison Jr. will take over the Scar role for the new one.

“Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda will be writing the songs for the new film, joining his work on other Disney films like “Moana,” “Encanto” and the live-action “The Little Mermaid”. The film hits cinemas on December 20th.
