Disney kicked off its D23 Showcase with a song from “Moana 2” as Auli’i Cravalho took to the stage to sing the title “We’re Back”.
Dwayne Johnson joined her towards the end. That came ahead of the film’s second trailer which has just been released online and can be seen below.
The sequel to its celebrated 2016 animated hit takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.
Cravalho and Johnson reprise their Moana and Maui roles respectively. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
The project was originally planned as a TV series, but early on the company opted to retool it and produce a second film. Moana will start off the film taking on the role of chief leader of her tribe, and dealing with a younger sister this time out.
The new movie will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina (Lin-Manuel Miranda is not returning).
The first film made over $680 million at the box office and crossing 1 billion hours streamed on Disney+ last year. A live-action adaptation of the first film is also in the works.
