There’s a lot of celebrating going on in the Blake Lively-Ryan Reynolds household right now with spouses both taking the top two spots at the box-office.
Marvel Studios juggernaut “Deadpool & Wolverine” looks set to take the top spot with a $55.8 million third weekend, a drop of 42% which brings its domestic total to $495.9 million.
However Lively’s adult drama “It Ends with Us” offered some serious competition, the title taking in $7 million in previews and actually beating D&W on Friday with a $17 million first day haul compared to $15.6 million.
The superhero mashup has clawed back its lead, nonetheless “It Ends With Us” is still set for an incredibly impressive opening weekend of around $45 million – doubly so considering the film’s budget was only $25 million.
Unlike some other film adaptations of celebrated female-targeted novels, this one is resonating with audiences and delivering a strong A- CinemaScore. It also marks a strong comeback for Lively following the flop of “The Rhythm Section”.
“Twisters” will come in third with $15.4 million for the weekend, followed by the game-to-film adaptation “Borderlands” which is looking at a disastrous sub-$10 million debut. The film has managed to claw its way up to a 10% Rotten Tomatoes rating, but audiences are rejecting it as much as critics with a terrible D+ CinemaScore.
Also opening this weekend was horror “Cuckoo” which was mostly ignored, coming in ninth with $3 million. Shyamalan’s “Trap” fell 56% to $6.7 million and sixth place in its second weekend, while “Harold and the Purple Crayon” fell 42% to $3.5 million in its second weekend.
