Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav has indicated that the company is looking into licensing it’s owned IP to non-Warner Bros studios to produce games.
Warners has a large range of IP, and multiple developers under its belt. Even so, numerous properties and franchises have been left to languish in recent years.
Zaslav wants to change that. Speaking as part of his company’s quarterly financial results, Zaslav was asked about why last year’s “Hogwarts Legacy” was such a success for the studio.
He puts it down to how immersive it was and how they are potentially considering offers from outside the company to maximise their IP value (via IGN):
“One of the reasons that Hogwarts Legacy was so successful and the number one game last year, [was that] you went to Hogwarts Legacy and you entered the game and you were able to become part of that world.
That, ultimately, I think is a big piece of where this industry is going. That we’ll create a movie, whether it’s Batman or Superman or Harry Potter, and maybe there’ll be a TV show, but the ability to go in that world and have that experience of spending time with all the characters is something that we still own.
We have eleven studios here, and we have a lot of IP. And there’s also a lot of interest among others in coming to take advantage of some of that IP for gaming, which we’re looking at.”
Warner Bros. Discovery, which also recently acquired Player First Games which created its “MultiVersus” game, is coming off a rough quarter thanks to the poor sales of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”.
Things are expected to pick up though with titles such as “Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions” which has released a new trailer that can be seen below. That game releases on all platforms (bar Switch) on September 3rd.
