Joaquin Phoenix has abruptly and unexpectedly walked off the set of “Carol” and “May December” Todd Haynes’ new movie – killing the gay detective noir project in the process.

Phoenix was set to play Richard Rent, a volatile cop in 1930s Los Angeles. He and Joe Thomas (Danny Ramirez), a deeply assimilated Native American schoolteacher, become targets of the city’s corrupt political machine.

Together they flee together to Mexico to survive. As the threat of global war looms, they enter a brutal yet tender love affair in the humid jungles of the Western coastline – one that rearranges their perceptions of the past, the future, and themselves.

According to Deadline, Haynes was either filming, or about to begin filming, the movie in Guadalajara when Phoenix suddenly exited the project just prior to Comic-Con.

As a result, the film is “completely dead” with Phoenix gone and there are no plans to recast. Producers have spent the past fortnight trying to put the project back together to no avail and some crew members are reportedly due money.

It’s not clear why Phoenix exited so abruptly, the actor is famously deeply committed to projects.
