James Gunn introduces the world to his twisted vision of DC Comics, the only way we’d expect: the most bizarre way possible. This is the 1st trailer for the animated series Creature Commandos.
In this animated series, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) is banned from using human prisoners as an undercover task force, following the events of Peacemaker. Luckily, she’s found a loophole.
Waller introduces Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) to a hidden section of Belle Reve, consisting of the most dastardly demons, robots and mutant weasels ever found on Earth. None of these creatures are human, making them the perfect candidate for the new Task Force X, the “Creature Commandos”.

The trailer features the motley crew’s adventures as they carry out any mission deemed too psychotic for any rational human. Deviate from the mission in any way? You die
An auspicious beginning to creator James Gunn’s DC Cinematic Universe if I’ve ever seen one. Gunn has revolutionized multiple Hollywood franchises by focusing on the occult, strange and freaky underbellies of fantasy. However, he imbues them with such fun and relatability that it’s nearly impossible not to join in the fun.
And the 1st teaser for Creature Commandos is no different. Although in a different stylistic medium, and featuring a timeline so unclear it would make the X-Men series blush, there’s a conscious effort to thematically tie Creature Commandos into Gunn’s previous forays in DC, slowly but surely building out his world.
DC’s film/TV properties have stood out among the clutter when they swing for the fences. How apropos, then, that the beginning to the next big cinematic universe begins in a way no one would have expected. With a whole slate of film & TV on the horizon, the sheer off-the-wall batty visuals and characters of Creature Commandos bode well for the future. While the MCU falls into a creative rut, the time could finally be right for DC to swoop in and take the reins.
Directed by James Gunn, Creature Commandos will release on MAX in the US this December. The movie stars an ensemble cast led by Frank Grillo, Steve Agee & Viola Davis.
