Apple Original Films has given the green light for a sequel to “Wolfs,” the upcoming George Clooney & Brad Pitt-led comedy about rival professional fixers.
Deadline reports that Apple has closed a deal with the film’s writer/director Jon Watts (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”) to return as writer, director and producer of a sequel to again star Clooney and Pitt.
The film will shortly have its world premiere at the 81st Venice Film Festival and was originally planning a wide theatrical release on September 20th before eventually ending up on the Apple TV+ service.
Now though, the streamer has changed its mind and will give it a limited theatrical release on September 20th before going for a global premiere on the Apple TV+ service on September 27th.
In a statement, Apple Original Films head of features Matt Dentler says:
“Wolfs is the kind of big event movie that makes Apple TV+ such an exceptional home for the best in entertainment… Releasing the movie to theaters before making it widely available to Apple TV+ customers brings the best of both worlds to audiences, and we’re excited to see fans embrace the movie as we start working with Jon on the sequel.”
Sources for the trade say it does not signal a change to Apple’s release strategy. Apple has tried more traditional theatrical releases with big P&A spend for films over the past year – “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon” disappointed while “Argylle” and “Fly Me to the Moon” were seen as major bombs.
The “Wolfs” release is more in line with their Doug Liman-directed heist caper film “The Instigators” which had a limited release last week and premieres this Friday on the Apple TV+ service.
The upcoming Steve McQueen-directed WWII drama “Blitz” is expected to adopt the same strategy too, whereas next year’s Joseph Kosinski-directed “F1” film with Brad Pitt is sticking with the more traditional theatrical run.
