Universal Pictures launched “Twister” to a very strong $81.3 million domestic opening weekend just two weeks ago – the best-ever opening weekend for a natural disaster movie.
Reviews were quite good, the CinemaScore was a solid A- and by the end of its third weekend domestically it sits at a total at $195 million, front-loaded for sure but still good numbers and it’s still at #2 at the box-office this weekend.
However, armed with a $155 million production budget, it needed to do strong business overseas to make profit. That’s not happening. Even with opening a week earlier in multiple territories, global returns have been pretty dismal.
At the end of its third week, the film’s overseas haul sits at just $66.1 million – the film has done well in Australia, Mexico and UK but that’s about it.
Now, according to When to Stream, the film is expected to hit PVOD services like Amazon and iTunes on Tuesday August 13th – just over three weeks after release (25 days).
The outlet notes the date has not yet been announced or confirmed by the film’s U.S. theatrical distributor Universal Pictures and so is subject to change.
However, Universal has generally put films on PVOD platforms either 18 or 31 days after their theatrical debut and with “Borderlands,” “It Ends with Us” and “Cuckoo” all arriving this coming Friday – screen space is going to become limited.
