Netflix is developing “Bat Boy,” a young adult horror-comedy live-action TV series about the infamous 1990s tabloid fictional character.
“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and live-action “One Piece” co-showrunner Joe Tracz are teaming on the project.
The character, a half-bat/half-boy, made cover stories in supermarket publication Weekly World News. The issue with his front-page photo became the second-best-selling issue in the tabloid’s history, turning him into a de facto mascot for the paper and a pop culture icon.
It also spawned an off-Broadway musical, one which has no connection to this contemporary Netflix reimagining.
In the coming-of-age series, teenager Bobby Bates re-enters mainstream society after living in seclusion on the outskirts in the remnants of a long-dissipated carnival.
When Bobby enrolls at Cypressville High, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery while attempting to find his place among his new peers and society and trying to solve a mystery bubbling up from the Florida swamps
Jimmy Gibbons and Greg D’Alessandro will also executive produce.
