Warner Bros. Discovery will shut down its cartoon streaming service Boomerang next month after more than seven years as a standalone service.
As a result of the shutdown, the service’s catalogue will become part of Max. From next month, most Boomerang subscribers will be migrated to WBD’s Max ad-free tier but retain their current subscription price for a minimum of six months.
The service itself will fully shut down on September 30th with the Boomerang app and website no longer available at that time. However the classic cartoons channel will continue to be available through partner pay-TV providers.
The service primarily features animated programming from the Warner Bros. Animation library including Warner Bros. Cartoons and Hanna-Barbera productions among others. “Scooby-Doo,” “Looney Tunes,” “Tom and Jerry” and “The Flintstones” all screened as part of the service.
This follows WBD’s shutting down the MotorTrend+ SVOD service and arranging a similar arrangement with several months of low-price, ad-free Max.
Numerous companies are moving towards consolidation and bundling as revenue has replaced subscriber growth as the measure of SVOD success and so niche streaming services are quietly going away to cut costs and boost engagement metrics.
