Filmmaker Justin Simien has spoken about the scrapping of his Donald Glover-led “Solo: A Star Wars Story” spin-off series “Lando”. The “Haunted Mansion” and “Dear White People” director, and the series itself, were first announced as being in the works in December 2020.
Then last year, Simien exited the project which was being retooled as a film with Glover and his brother Stephen Glover attached to write. That project is still kicking, despite some confusion over today’s remarks.
The comments come from Collider who interviewed Simien while out promoting his MGM+ docuseries “Hollywood Black” which examines race and representation in Hollywood.
Talking about how far along the “Lando” TV series was before the Glovers took over and opted to retool it for the cinema, he says he’s still grieving a bit over the loss:
“It was pretty developed. There was a Bible. There was concept art. There were scripts. But it just wasn’t meant to be. For me, it has to be done pretty straight on. Like, ‘I am in grief. I do not feel good.’ I have to let myself feel those feelings.
There’s so much that I experience that I get to keep forever and take into the next project. I can’t obviously take the storyline or the IP or the characters, but there’s so much more that I got, as a maker, and that’s mine. Sorry, it’s too late, you can’t take that part back.”
Simien isn’t laying low though, he is teaming with actress/writer Tawny Newsome on a live-action “Star Trek” comedy series first announced at San Diego Comic-Con. That follows a group of Federation outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet who discover their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.
“Hollywood Black” will premiere on August 11th on MGM+.
