The weekend isn’t even over and yet Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” has already surpassed the entire $324.6 million domestic haul of its predecessor “Deadpool 2” as of Saturday morning.
In its second weekend of release the film is looking set for a $94 million haul domestically, a drop of a quite healthy 56% considering its huge opening weekend. However, it’s already beating projections, so by the end of Sunday that dollar haul could be higher and the drop-off lower.
For now, it’s projected to hit $392.5 million by end of Sunday – overtaking the long-held “The Passion of the Christ” ($370.7 million) record to become the highest grossing R-rated movie ever in North America.
Where it will end is not clear, but estimates are the film will clear the half-billion dollar mark domestically before it’s finished its run. “Twisters” is coming in second with $22 million and a total of $195 million thus far.
Meanwhile M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap” is third and headed for a $17 million debut which is along expected lines and on par with the more recent Shyamalan film openings. The film received a C+ CinemaScore which is the same as “Old”.
Also debuting is “Harold and the Purple Crayon” which no-one is seeing with the film heading for a $6 million opening.
