A certain subset of Outposters are likely to be very excited about the live-action Voltron movie. Or wary, this is Hollywood after all. Either way, it seems to be switching homes. According to a report at The Insneider a bidding war between Universal, Warner Bros. and Amazon/MGM has been won.
Voltron will go to the Bezos Empire.
The project has been greenlit and will start casting imminently.
Voltron was an American adaption of several Japanese anime television series from Toei Animation. The original television series aired in syndication from September 10, 1984, to November 18, 1985.
The first season of Voltron, featuring the Lion Force Voltron, was adapted from the series Beast King GoLion. The second season, featuring the Vehicle Team Voltron, was adapted from the unrelated series Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.
Voltron: Defender of the Universe was the top-rated syndicated children’s show for two years during its original run, so for an entire generation this could be a big deal. I was always more of a Battle Of The Planets man myself.
The American version told the story of five young space pilots in a battalion named the Robot Lions. In true Japanese style, these vehicles combine to join a giant robot known as Voltron. Fighting ensues. Standard.
Red Notice and Skyscraper director, and frequent Dwayne Johnson collaborator, Rawson Marshall Thurber is attached to co-write and direct the new film. Ellen Shanman is also co-writing. Todd Lieberman, Bob Koplar, and David Hoberman are attached to produce.
