Tracking figures for the last month of Summer show that it’s going to be bleak out there for most titles bar a certain sci-fi franchise.
The five-week tracking forecast at Box-Office Theory indicates that only one film post-“Deadpool & Wolverine” seems likely to debut to over $20 million this month – “Alien: Romulus”.
Early projections for that film’s domestic opening weekend are now in the $34-43 million range. That’s about on par with other entries in the franchise of late which saw “Prometheus” open to $51 million and “Alien: Covenant” to $36 million.
Official budgetary figures haven’t been released for the film beyond a $40 million spend in Hungary where it was shot, with best estimates via fan forum AVP Galaxy suggesting the film’s total production budget could be as little as $60-70 million (about 2/3 that of “Alien Covenant”).
It’s looking to be a profitable hit for 20th Century Studios, faring better than Lionsgate’s two new films – “Borderlands” which is tracking for a $13-18 million debut, and “The Crow” reboot at just $7.5-11 million.
The projections come as “Deadpool & Wolverine” is heading for a $90 million second weekend this weekend alongside M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap” which is aiming to debut at around $18-20 million.
