It looks like Marvel Jesus is about to beat the other Jesus at the U.S. box-office.
Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” has continued its strong box-office run through the week so far and tracking indicates the film is going to pull in $84.5 million in its second weekend.
That’s a drop of 60%, perfectly in line with the 57-65% drops of the two previous “Deadpool” films. However, if it beats tracking estimates, the fall-off could be lower – especially as the film is still across all the IMAX and PLF screens this weekend.
Either way, the film is reportedly on track to earn around $380 million by Sunday – overtaking the final domestic totals of the two previous “Deadpool” films, which earned $363 million and $325 million respectively. It has already surpassed the domestic totals of all previous “X-Men” movies.
It’s being reported that D&W looks set to become the highest-grossing R-rated feature at the domestic box-office to date by end of Sunday – breaking a twenty-year record held by Mel Gibson’s 2004 film “The Passion of the Christ” which took in a domestic total of $371 million.
Its only competition is M. Night Shyamalan’s PG-13 thriller “Trap” starring Josh Hartnett. That film wasn’t screened in advance for press and is expected to earn between $15-20 million.
Fairing far worse is the live-action “Harold and the Purple Crayon” film adaptation which is tipped to debut with just $6 million and is coming off bad reviews.
