The International Olympics Committee has exited its partnership with Nintendo and SEGA in regards to the long-running “Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games” series reports Eurogamer.
For the first time in nearly two decades, no new “Mario & Sonic” tie-in is happening for the Olympics which are currently underway in Paris.
The outlet indicates the IOC has done this in order to explore deals with new partners, NFTs and e-sports. They chose not to renew their licensing deal and allowed it to lapse in 2020.
Cocker previously worked at ISM Ltd, a digital media firm responsible for managing the Olympic Games license in the world of video games.
Six Mario & Sonic Olympic Games titles have launched since the first in 2007 with entries for Summer games in London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, as well as the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014. The series has been a major success, but has been criticised for repetitiveness in recent years.
A smartphone game title, “Olympics Go!,” is the sole official video game tie-in with the Paris Olympics.
