Earlier this month, Marvel Studios premiered the first trailer for its Kathryn Hahn-led “WandaVision” spin-off “Agatha All Along”.
What caught people by surprise was the tone which played more horror than expected. It also finally showed off the story which seems to be a treasure hunt film with Agatha broken free by a suspicious goth teen (Joe Locke) but lacking mystical powers.
The pair choose to enlist a group of desperate witches to traverse the legendary Witches’ Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they are missing.
A new profile in Empire Online has now gone into more detail about the series and confirms it is indeed in the adventure/horror vibe with Locke telling the outlet that showrunner Jac Schaeffer has compared it to an iconic 1980s film:
“Jac sent Kevin Feige a picture of the Witches’ Road set and he replied, ‘Oh my God, we’re making The Goonies’. That’s what I’d been saying – that we were making this adventure series.”
Hahn says the show allows her explore a new direction for her villainous character, a more vulnerable side hidden under all the externally projected bravado:
“We’ve seen her with all her bravado and crazy confidence. So much of Agatha is performance. It was exciting to get to the kernel under the sass and sarcasm and taking pleasure in other people’s pain. There’s something broken under that, big-time.”
Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza co-star in the series which debuts on Disney+ on September 18th.
