Marvel’s Comic-Con panel had plenty of treats for people in the room in Hall H including a new trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World,” a first trailer for “Thunderbolts*” and a reel of test footage from “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”.
That F4 test reel has since leaked online via social media, and confirms the film’s retro 1960s aesthetic. Shot in 4:3 aspect ratio – it starts with a classroom scene that seems to have that “Speed Racer” style ‘everything in focus’ look as Pedro Pascal’s Mr. Fantastic teaches a kids class.
From there it takes on the look of a 1950s/60s sci-fi films (ala “Forbidden Planet”) in terms of its production design – director Matt Shakman delivering on the promise of giving us something different.
The Thing can be glimpsed, but only in silhouette, including a scene with the character on a matchmaking game show.
Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bacharach and Joseph Quinn are all over the footage which shows off plenty of their astronaut suits, the Baxter building, the very pointy triple-legged rocket they head into space in, and the final shot involving Galactus looking into a building.
So far the reactions to the test footage have been overwhelmingly positive, even as the reaction to the film’s new title has been much more mixed.
Production on the film kicks off on Tuesday ahead of a release July 2025.
