Paramount+ has announced that the “Star Trek” is about to try something it hasn’t done before – a live-action comedy series.
Announced during this morning’s Star Trek Universe panel at Comic-Con, the new series will be co-written by “Lower Decks” actress/writer Tawny Newsome and filmmaker Justin Simien.
Alex Kurtzman, who is the current Trek franchise czar, will make his half-hour writing debut on the project.
Some specifics are under wraps so it’s not clear if this will be a single-camera or multi-camera affair, and no title is yet out.
However a brief synopsis suggests the series follows a group of Federation outsiders serving at a gleaming resort planet who find out their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.
The series will boast some “odd couple pairings” and be set in the 25th century which puts it around or after the events of the last season of “Star Trek: Picard” which takes place in 2401.
Kurtzman, Simien and Newsome executive produce alongside Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.
