Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – but not as Tony Stark.
Walking on stage at Hall H for Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel and decked out in a green suit, Downey Jr. was revealed to be playing iconic Marvel villain Doctor Doom.
In addition, it was revealed that the title of the fifth “Avengers” film will be “Avengers: Doomsday” with Doom taking a major role in that feature which is expected to begin shooting early next year.
Downey Jr. said on stage: “New mask, same task… What I tell ya I like playing complicated characters.” His arrival and announcement served as the end of a panel which had otherwise been light on information.
The panel also confirmed Joe and Anthony Russo will direct both “Avengers” films with “Avengers: Doomsday” coming May 2026 and “Avengers: Secret Wars” arriving May 2027. In addition Stephen McFeely, who co-wrote ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ for the Russos, will return to write these two films.
New logos for both films were also released and can be seen above. The reaction to the reveal can be seen below.
