A representative for the SAG-AFTRA union says the current actor’s strike related to the video game industry will not impact Rockstar Games’ upcoming “Grand Theft Auto VI” according to Kotaku reporter Ethan Gach.
The strike, called by labour union SAG-AFTRA, began today after negotiations over the Interactive Media Agreement fell through this week. The sticking point was whether acceptable protections for its members were provided around the use of AI.
Gach reportedly says performers working on the game are allowed to continue working on the project. It is currently unknown which performers are involved in the game as little is known about its cast.
The comments follow confusion that began with the reporting of the move to strike, in which the title was suggested as being impacted.
SAG-AFTRA had been in negotiations with ten video game companies and their performance production arms since October 2022 over this contract including Activision Productions, Blindlight, Disney Character Voices, EA Productions, Formosa Interactive, Insomniac Games, Epic Games, Take 2 Productions, VoiceWorks Productions and WB Games.
Those companies now likely won’t be able to hire unionised actors to perform motion capture or voiceover work in their games. “Grand Theft Auto VI” is expected to be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2025.
