Controversial animated online sensation “Skibidi Toilet” could be making the jump from digital video shorts and games to TV series and films.
Filmmaker Michael Bay and former Paramount Pictures president Adam Goodman are reportedly developing the project, talking about it on the latest episode of a Variety podcast.
Goodman says:”We are absolutely in talks right now, both on the television side and the earliest conversations right now on the film side. But it’s not a be-all, end-all for us.”
“Skibidi Toilet” began as an 11-second video uploaded to YouTube in February last year in which a head emerges from a toilet singing.
So began a cultural phenomenon as the the video turned into more than seventy 1-to-5-minute videos depicting an escalating war between the Toilets and the Cyborgs. Merchandise will be coming shortly.
Roblox hosts dozens of games made by fans based on the short with one such title, “Skibidi Toilet Tycoon,” logging over 75 million plays in just 11 months.
Goodman says “Skibidi Toilet” is “something that could be the next ‘Transformers’ or could be a Marvel universe.”
He would not specify any particular studios with which he is in discussions but the talk now is of a hybrid animated/live action adaptation drawing inspiration from “John Wick” and “District 9”.
