New Zealand acting legend Lucy Lawless is set to return to the “Spartacus” universe with the new Starz spin-off series “Spartacus: House of Ashur”.
The series posits the idea that Nick Tarabay’s Ashur didn’t die on Mount Vesuvius at the end of the second season (‘Vengeance’) and was instead gifted the gladiator school once owned by Batiatus (John Hannah) in return for aiding the Romans in killing Spartacus and putting an end to the slave rebellion.
Despite her character dying at the end of ‘Vengeance’, Lawless will return as Lucretia from the original in a guest starring capacity. Her part is said to be instrumental in setting up this alternate timeline to the original series.
In the original series, Lucretia was the scheming wife of Batiatus (John Hannah). She survived the first season finale’s massacre and, with Ashur’s help, became a prophetess to the citizens of Capua.
Original “Spartacus” creator, writer and executive producer Steven S. DeKnight returns to the franchise as showrunner and executive producer of “Spartacus: House of Asher” with the ten-episode series currently in production in New Zealand. Tarabay, Graham McTavish, Claudia Black, Ivana Baquero, Tenika Davis, Jamaica Vaughan, Jordi Webber, India Shaw-Smith and Leigh Gill co-star.
Lawless, who rose to fame as the lead in “Xena: Warrior Princess,” recently made her directorial debut with the documentary “Never Look Away” at Sundance this year and currently leads the Australian series “My Life is Murder” which is in its fourth season.
