In the wake of the Emmy nominations earlier this week, Amazon MGM Studios television chief Vernon Sanders has been giving interviews and has offered updates on Prime Video projects.
One of the most notable is Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s new live-action series adaptation of the “Tomb Raider” franchise. The project received a series order in May.
He tells The Wrap that filming on it will likely begin early in 2025. He confirms the “Fleabag” and “Killing Eve” creator will be executive producing and potentially penning the entire series.
No word on an episode count, but he explains a rough timetable is in place and a casting search is underway:
“We are hard at work. We’ve got great material. Phoebe [Waller-Bridge] is really good. We’re really excited. My guess is we’ll spend the rest of this year getting things prepped so that we can start production early next year. We’ve got to find our Lara Croft, so that global wide search will start sooner rather than later.”
The series is one of three projects expected to be part of an interconnected multimedia universe with Amazon developing a new “Tomb Raider” film and a new game tying it all together.
The new universe is separate from the “Tomb Raider” anime series hitting Netflix in October starring Marvel and “Mission Impossible” alum Hayley Atwell as the voice of Lara. That series is set in the same continuity as the 2013-2018 game reboot trilogy and serves as both a sequel to those and a bridge between them and the original/Legend games.
