Universal Pictures’ “Twisters” is blowing a gale at the box-office and domestically has beaten all expectations to deliver an $80.5 million opening weekend – the third biggest of the year behind “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part Two”.
Internationally, it’s doing strong but is more of an F3 than an F5, with the film taking in $27.1 million from 76 foreign territories. Having opened last weekend in some countries, the film has grossed $123.2 million worldwide to date.
The film’s biggest markets outside the U.S. have been the U.K. ($5.5 million), Mexico ($2.5 million), Australia ($2 million) and France ($1.9 million). Where it didn’t fare well was China, making just $1.5 million.
The film reportedly came in on a budget at $155 million to produce, that doesn’t include the marketing and P&A spend, not including the many millions in global marketing efforts. Universal has the film domestically and Warners is handling the overseas release.
Universal and Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4” meanwhile has generated $574 million globally so far, with the film taking a further $23.8 million domestically and $52 million internationally this weekend.
Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” is still in cinemas and pulled in $12.8 million domestically and $34.2 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $596.3 million so far.
Rounding out the top five domestically were “Longlegs” with $11.7 million and “A Quiet Place: Day One” with $6.1 million.
