By This week came the news that Marvel Studios was in talks with “Avengers: Endgame” filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo to return to direct the fifth and sixth “Avengers” films.
It came as a bit of a surprise. Marvel itself also seemed to have moved on, while the Russos had previously indicated they wouldn’t be free to work on an MCU film until the end of the decade.
At the same time, they’ve had little luck post-Marvel beyond occasionally producing a hit like “Extraction”. Otherwise, the likes of “The Gray Man” and “Citadel” have been costly duds, “Cherry” was barely seen and their upcoming “The Electric State” is coming in on a super high budget.
Now though, they’re back together and a new report at Puck News indicates that Feige turned down offers from Hollywood agency CAA to hire filmmakers like Greg Berlanti, Noah Hawley, and other unnamed candidates to direct “Avengers 5”.
Berlanti, whose directorial effort “Fly Me to the Moon” is in cinemas, was behind The CW’s Arrowverse and so knows superhero ensembles. But he hasn’t done a film on the scale of these beyond co-writing 2011’s reviled “Green Lantern” film.
Hawley meanwhile has big TV commitments including the recently wrapped filming “Alien: Earth”. The FX network indicates this week they want Hawley to get going on a second season fast.
Ultimately it’s expected the Russos involvement could be confirmed as early as next week with Marvel set to make big announcements at Comic Con.
