Master Chief has fallen as Paramount+ will not be ordering a third season of its Pablo Schreiber-led video game series adaptation “Halo”.
The series, based on the flagship game franchise at Xbox, launched in March 2022 while a second season hit in February this year. The show launched after many years in development as a film before finally becoming a series.
The results weren’t good. Critics and audience reviews were mixed and though it rated well, the first season being the second-most watched original series for Paramount+ as of mid-2022, numbers for the second season weren’t revealed beyond slightly better reviews.
Paramount+ said in a statement:
“We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.”
The series marked a sharp contrast to other game-to-series adaptations like “The Last of Us” and “Fallout” which have had both critical acclaim and have been hugely popular. Even the likes of “Twisted Metal” seemed to score better with audiences.
Despite Paramount+ giving up on it, TV Line indicates that producers Amblin Television, Xbox and 343 Industries are looking elsewhere and have been given the streamer’s blessing to shop around a third season.
