Hot off his roles in “Benediction,” “Foundation,” “The Crown” and most recently “Interview with the Vampire,” British actor Ben Daniels will next be seen playing a part of fantasy history.
A photo has been released of Daniels in character as legendary elf Círdan the Shipwright in the second season of Amazon’s lavish fantasy series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”.
EW was first to publish the shot of the actor in character who isn’t directly involved in the original “The Lord of the Rings” novels (and not seen in the Peter Jackson films), but is well-known to hardcore Tolkien fandom.
In the lore, Círdan is a master shipbuilder and also master of the Grey Havens – the harbor that can transport elves back to the Undying Lands of Valinor. It is briefly glimpsed at the end of “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” as Frodo and the other ring-bearers exit Middle Earth.
He’s also one of the initial bearers of the elven rings (Celebrimbor and Galadriel being the other two). At one point in the lore Cirdan also covertly gives his ring to Gandalf to help inspire the people of Middle-earth to resist Sauron.
In the TV series, Círdan will serve as a mentor to the younger elf Elrond (Robert Aramayo). The second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” premieres August 29th on Prime Video.
