“The Shining” and “Popeye” star Shelley Duval has died. The actress passed away in her sleep of complications from diabetes at her home in Texas. She was 75.
Duvall was a discovery of filmmaker Robert Altman, and made her onscreen debut as teenage seductress in “Brewster McCloud”. She went on to star in multiple films for Altman including “McCabe & Mrs. Miller,” “Nashville,” and an award-winning turn in “3 Women”.
She also had a minor role in Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall” before, in 1980, landing arguably her most famous role as Wendy Torrance – the wife of Jack Nicholson’s Jack Torrance in Kubrick’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Shining”.
Around the same time she also starred as Olive Oyl opposite Robin Williams in the live-action “Popeye” film. Other roles in film included “Time Bandits,” “Roxanne,” “Frankenweenie,” “Suburban Commando,” “Home Fries” and “The Portrait of a Lady” with Duvall known for her versatility in roles.
Duvall also had a thriving production company with Think Entertainment which scored multiple Emmy nominations for tis innovative children’s programming for cable.
She returned to acting in 2022 after two decades away with a role in “The Forest Hills”. Duvall revealed, on an episode of “Dr. Phil” in 2016, she had been suffering from mental illness.
Survivors include musician Dan Gilroy, whom she’s been involved with since 1989, and her brothers, Scott, Stewart and Shane.
