Ahhh, Star Wars. How you are forever finding new ways to disappoint us since you got yourself knocked up by The Mouse. Or at least you would be, if we were bothering to watch. I bailed after Ahsoka, unable to carry on my abused spouse act a moment longer.
I have not seen any of The Acolyte, but I hear it’s absolutely terrible. Even worse than even we, at our most mocking, could have joked about.
So these days we greet any new Star Wars news with low expectations, if any expectations at all. The news that Shawn Levy was to direct a new Star Wars project wasn’t news that we hated. Levy is a fun filmmaker. However, this is Disney Star Wars so the most we could muster was ambivalence.
While Levy is currently cropping up everywhere due to Deadpool and Wolverine being imminent, there has been a rumor of some movement on his Star Wars project that had been delayed due to the strikes and then the Marvel gig.
According to The Insneider it’s back in development, likely to be his next project, and he’s turning to an old writing collaborator of his. Jonathan Tropper.
Tropper was a co-creator of Banshee. Banshee is the ultimate guilty pleasure TV show. A simply exquisite blend of hyper-violence, adult language, sex, and silliness all wrapped up in an excellent thriller. If you haven’t seen it then what the hell are you waiting for? In fact, fuck it, I think it is due for a complete re-watch in the Stark household.
He also wrote the Cinemax series Warrior, which also gets tremendous reviews.
If Levy has an R-rated breakthrough at Marvel Studios (also within the Mouse Empire) with Deadpool and Wolverine, will we get to see him and Tropper let loose in the world of Star Wars?
He has already said that Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy told him, when he signed, that she wants him to work on a story and in a tone that reflects his own taste. Yeah… that’s what she always says and then the notes start to arrive.
