Danny Ramirez looks set to co-star with Joaquin Phoenix in “Carol” and “May December” filmmaker Todd Haynes’ next movie which begins production soon. Additional casting is now underway.
Ramirez broke out in “Top Gun: Maverick” and as Lt. Mickey ‘Fanboy’ Garcia and in Marvel’s “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” series as Joaquin Torres. He’ll reprise the latter role in the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World”.
The project is being dubbed a 1930s gay detective noir co-written by Haynes and Jon Raymond. It reportedly embraces noir tropes but re-imagined as a “lyrical, sexually charged romance” with the project expected to be NC-17 rated.
Phoenix plays Richard Rent, a volatile cop in 1930s Los Angeles. He and Joe Thomas (Ramirez), a deeply assimilated Native American schoolteacher, become targets of the city’s corrupt political machine.
Together they must flee together to Mexico to survive. As the threat of global war looms, they enter a brutal yet tender love affair in the humid jungles of the Western coastline – one that rearranges their perceptions of the past, the future, and themselves.
Haynes has previous described the film as a ‘button pusher’. No release date has yet been set but a Cannes 2025 premiere is likely being targeted. Cinematographer Maryse Alberti will serve as the film’s director of photography.
