Three cadets have signed on for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. They will join the already-announced Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti. The new recruits are Kerrice Brooks (My Old Ass), Bella Shepard (Wolf Pack), and George Hawkins (Tell Me Everything).
The Paramount+ show is set in the 32nd century, following on from the later episodes of Star Trek: Discovery.
The new series will follow the lives of various cadets at the Starfleet Academy as they train for a career onboard a starship as members of Starfleet, preparing to support the United Federation of Planets. It picks up as the first group of new cadets is inducted after the Academy is relaunched centuries after The Burn.
Hunter is a captain and the chancellor of the Academy. Giamatti will play the villain of the season, with a dark connection to the past of one of the cadets who is a threat to both the Academy, and the Federation itself.
Gee, I wonder if these plucky (and no doubt strong, female-heavy, diverse, sexuality varient) kids will save the galaxy? I should place a bet on this. In the words of Worf:
“I am a graduate of Starfleet Academy. I know many things.”
As this is Nu-Trek, I imagine the Kobayashi Maru will be further bastardized in order to prove the precocious talent of some of these Starfleet Academy cadets.
Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau are showrunners and executive producers. Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber are also in for the points as executive producers.
Apparently, the show will feature the largest physical set ever constructed for a Star Trek series with a two-storey atrium, lecture theater and classrooms.
Filming on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy begins later this summer.
