Following yesterday’s news that a sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada” is in development at Disney with both Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt in talks to return, more talent from the original are also returning.
EW says that both actors Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci are in talks to reprise their roles, while director David Frankel and producer Wendy Finerman are also back.
In addition, a source confirms yesterday’s report that original screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna is also working on the sequel’s screenplay.
The 20th Century Fox film was based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 roman à clef about working for Vogue editor Anna Wintour at the height of the magazine business.
The sequel’s storyline sees Streep’s condescending Miranda Priestly at the end of her career, facing the decline of traditional magazine publishing. She’s forced to go head-to-head with former assistant Emily (Blunt) who is now a high-powered executive at a luxury group, a group whose advertising dollars Priestly desperately needs.
The first film opened to a $326 million box-office haul worldwide along with positive reviews.
Elton John’s stage musical adaptation of the first film has begun previews in Plymouth, England, in advance of a West End opening in October. That version will star Vanessa Williams as Priestly.
