The Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones-led sequel to 1996’s epic VFX-heavy action film “Twister” is set for a big & blowy opening next month.
Early tracking projections indicate “Twisters” is heading for a $45-50 million domestic debut weekend when it opens on July 19th. That beats the original which debuted to $41 million back in the mid-1990s ahead of what would be a $242 million domestic run.
The new film is said to be tracking well with both men and older women, but younger women aren’t clicking to the marketing as yet. Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”) directs the film from a script penned by Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”).
The film has been pegged as one of the few tentpoles of the Summer that’s drawing interest, not as much as “Deadpool & Wolverine” or “Inside Out 2” but could well be a mid-late Summer success in the way “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” was in the early Summer.
Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani and Maura Tierney co-star in the Universal release which will follow two weeks after the studio opens “Despicable Me 4” which aims for a $100M+ five-day holiday haul when it opens Wednesday July 3rd.
