Warner Bros. and Legendary have set a March 26th 2027 release date for the next Monsterverse film. The title is expected to be a third entry in the “Godzilla x Kong” sub-franchise and the sixth overall film in the ‘Monsterverse’.
The news follows in the wake of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” pulling in over $570 million at the worldwide box office – the highest-grossing film of the entire Monsterverse so far and the third-highest-grossing movie of the year to date.
It also follows on from the hiring of Grant Sputore (“I Am Mother”) to direct the film in the wake of the exit of Adam Wingard who directed the prior two films that teamed up the titans.
Wingard had hoped to return but he’s gone over to his own A24 film “Onslaught” instead because the scheduling couldn’t be worked out.
The script for the next film hails from Dave Callaham (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”).
The news also comes as “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is set to debut on Max next week with the title arriving on the streamer on Thursday July 4th. A special American Sign Language version of the film will be available.
