World-renowned circus group Cirque du Soleil has launched its own entertainment studio with plans for scripted and unscripted works including television, film, animation and documentaries.
One of the first projects of the rank will be “O,” a feature film based on their famed water-themed production which has Ridley Scott and his Scott Free banner developing the project.
The show, which is held at the Bellagio in Las Vegas since it launched in 1998, takes place above a 1.5 million gallon pool of water and includes synchronized swimming. By the end of 2019, over 10,000 performances had been done of the production.
Scott produces countless film and TV series, how far his involvement in the new film might go beyond that isn’t clear.
Former CBS and WWE exec Susan Levison will run Cirque du Soleil’s new studio division which aims to produce long-form content based on the brand and its IP such as shows like “Mystere,” “Ka,” and “Corteo”.
Levison will oversee programming and says in a statement: “[It’s an exciting time of growth and transformation. We intend to leverage our extensive IP library to create TV and Film projects that surprise and delight our audience.”
