Jared Padalecki has been something of a brand ambassador for The CW network for decades, his career has spanned across three shows on the network.
The actor got his start with several seasons of “Gilmore Girls,” segued into the meat of his career with fifteen seasons of “Supernatural,” and more recently has been leading one of the last scripted series left on the network with four seasons of “Walker”.
Now though, with “Walker” ended and the network being gutted by its new owners Nexstar to the point of being a shadow of what it was a decade ago, Padalecki has spoken candidly about the future of what was his home.
The network is effectively leaving behind scripted series bar the odd exception, transitioning towards cheap programming such as game shows based on board games. Padalecki tells Variety that could be its downfall:
“Nexstar is going in a different direction with The CW… I feel like The CW that I was a part of last year is not The CW that I was a part of under [former chairman and CEO] Mark Pedowitz for that entire, almost 20-year stretch.
They’re just changing the network around, where it’s not really going to be a TV network as much as it’s going to be, ‘Here’s something fun for an hour that you’ll never watch again, but hopefully you watch it. And it’s cheap!’
And I hate to say that, but I’m just being honest. I mean, f—it. They can’t fire me again. I’m just being brutally honest. I think it felt to me like they were looking for really easy, cheap content that they could fill up time with.”
Padalecki says the network was good about the “Walker” cancellation, letting the actor himself announce the news in his own way on social media. At last report, Padalecki is expected to head over to Amazon’s “The Boys” for that show’s final season.
