Sony Pictures and Legendary have announced that their live-action “Street Fighter” film, based on the classic Capcom video games, is set for a theatrical release on March 20th 2026.
News of the date follows in the wake of news the other week that Australian twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, aka RackaRacka, exited the film.
The “Talk to Me” helmers exited over scheduling conflicts as Legendary and Capcom wanted to begin sooner rather than later, and the pair are currently committed to an A24 film.
So, a new director is being sought ASAP to tackle what will be the third big screen attempt at the franchise following the infamous 1994 film with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, Kylie Minogue and Ming-Na Wen, and the 2009 “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” with Kristin Kreuk.
The long enduring fighting video games revolve around an international martial arts tournament where fighters from around the world compete to prove their strength and abilities.
They began life with the 1987 arcade game, and became a pop culture icon and mainstay with the release of “Street Fighter II” in 1991. The franchise got a new installment with “Street Fighter VI” last year.
The film will be distributed by Sony with Legendary co-developing the project with Capcom. It’s set to open two weeks before the release of the sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” on April 3rd 2026.
