CBS is doing for Dracula’s hunter what it did for Sherlock Holmes with “Elementary”.

Jonathan Lee (“Lockerbie”) is set to write the procedural series “Van Helsing” which will focus on a modern day interpretation of monster hunter character Abraham Van Helsing from Bram Stoker’s novel and countless screen interpretations.

In this contemporary take, Dr. Abraham Van Helsing uses his uniquely inquisitive mind working alongside his ex, relentless FBI special agent Mina Harker, to solve New York City’s most harrowing cases.

Rob Doherty (“Elementary”) will be executive producing alongside Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman for Lionsgate Television. CBS reportedly picked up the new series in a hotly contested auction.

Hugh Jackman played a blockbuster action version of the character in 2004, Anthony Hopkins played the role in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 “Dracula” film, and it was one of the signature roles of acting legend Peter Cushing.

The project isn’t to be confused with the Syfy series “Van Helsing” which followed Abraham Van Helsing’s descendant Vanessa (Kelly Overton).
