In the 1980s through the 2000s, it was called underlying sexual tension – TV shows built on screen partnerships where the question of will they ever be romantically involved being a key to its draw – from “Moonlighting,” to “The X-Files” to “The Nanny”.
These days it’s called shipping as fans ‘ship’ all sorts of pairings in their shows, even if the show itself may only vaguely acknowledge it. From Rey/Kylo Ren in “Star Wars” to Stiles/Derrick in “Teen Wolf,” there’s a lot out there.
One show however has deflated that community today and that is FX’s “The Bear”. Fans of the series have speculated about a slow-cook romance between Jeremy Allen White’s troubled restauranteur Carmy Berzatto and Ayo Edebiri’s crafty sous chef Sydney Adamu.
With Carmy breaking up with his romantic partner at the end of the second season, the door appeared open. However, at a press conference for the new season on Monday the actors made it clear – nothing is happening on that front.
Asked if the writers had considered adding a romantic angle to their story, Slashfilm reports that both White and Edebiri answered “no” immediately with White adding: “there is no talk in the rooms about any romantic implication.”
It follows on from a reveal by co-showrunner Joanna Calo last year that series creator Christopher Storer made it clear that a Carmy and Syd hook-up won’t happen.
The third season will launch a bit earlier than previously scheduled, with all episodes set to arrive on Hulu on Wednesday, June 26th at 9pm US-ET/6pm US-PT.
