Australian-Canadian documentary series “Stuff the British Stole” will be turned into a six-episode hour-long scripted narrative heist series with a “sharply funny lens”.
Anchuli Felicia King (“The Sympathizer,” “Deadloch”) is creating and writing the series while Ben Chessell (“The Great,” “Giri/Haji”) will direct and write episodes.
Also on the creative team are Kacie Anning (“Upload,” “The Other Guy”) and award-winning First Nations writer and playwright Dylan Van Den Berg.
Created by Australian journalist Marc Fennell, who also executive produces the new scripted series, the docuseries explores the impact of British colonialism, the controversy around artefacts taken during the height of the British Empire, and the debate around repatriation.
A second season launched last week with a third in development. The scripted series meanwhile deals with a group of diverse characters who almost accidentally steal their way to becoming the heroes of a global repatriation movement – along with putting themselves in the middle of a multi-government, political s— storm.
In terms of the new series, Wooden Horse (“The Clearing”) is co-producing with Warner Bros International Television Production Australia (“The Twelve,” “Love Me”). Jude Troy, Michael Brooks and Hamish Lewis are among the executive producers.
