After more than a year of negotiations, the producers of German period drama “Babylon Berlin” have been given the go-ahead for a fifth and final season.

Volker Bruch and Liv Lisa Fries will reprise their lead roles as police detective Gereon Rath and assistant Charlotte Ritter for the final eight-episode arc.

The final season, which adapts Volker Kutscher’s fifth Gereon Rath novel “The March Fallen,” unfolds in February 1933 as the Nazis seize power in Germany.

Series co-creators and showrunners Henk Handlogten, Achim von Borries and Tom Tykwer are all returning for the final season as producers and directors.

The show hit stumbling blocks in 2022 after the fourth season aired when Sky Deutschland shut down its original division, causing a major hole in the budget. Additionally, Netflix didn’t pick up the show’s fourth season after success with the first three.

Financing for the final season is now coming from its public broadcasting partners. Shooting aims to begin in Germany this F
Fall.
