One of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s best action vehicles, 1995’s “Sudden Death,” is coming to 4K UHD disc on August 27th.
Van Damme stars in the film as ex-fireman Darren McCord has a new job working security at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena where he’s scored tickets to the Stanley Cup Finals, unaware the place has been taken over by a group of terrorists.
Ex-CIA agent Joshua Foss (Powers Boothe) is holding the vice president (Raymond J. Barry) hostage in a press box and plans to blow up the building if he doesn’t pay the ransom. When Darren learns of what’s going on, he jumps into action to save the day.
The film is something of a cult classic, a straight action film enjoyed for its dabbles into the ridiculous with Van Damme’s memorable kitchen fight with a giant mascot, to Boothe chewing the scenery as his smarmy villain.
The film hails from the often underrated filmmaker Peter Hyams who has directed the likes of “Capricorn One,” “Outland,” “2010: The Year We Make Contact,” “The Presidio,” “Stay Tuned,” “Timecop,” “The Relic” and “End of Days”.
The set will include a new 4K 16-bit Dolby Vision restoration from the original camera negative. There’s also 5.1 Surround and Lossless 2.0 Stereo audio tracks and commentary by action film historians Mike Leeder and UK cult movie director Ross Boyask.
Special features include vintage interview clips, a behind-the-scenes featurette, trailer and TV spot.
The announcement comes as the actual Stanley Cup Finals are unfolding, with the Florida Panthers vs Edmonton Oilers deciding Game 7 set to play out tomorrow.
