Rapper/actor Ice Cube has offered an update on the fourth installment of the “Friday” franchise which has been in development hell at New Line since sometime in the mid-2000s.

Cube co-wrote and starred in the original 1995 comedy about a slacker in South Central Los Angeles who, along with his best friend Smokey (Chris Tucker), become indebted to a local drug dealer. Cube reprised his role for sequels in 2000 and 2002.

The fourth film, “Last Friday,” has seemingly scored some movement after a decade since Cube himself that the likelihood of the film happening was remote.

Speaking with Flavor Flav on his SiriusXM show Flavor of the Week (via Deadline, he says the studio has finally stopped dragging its feet and is getting around to it – but sadly, many of the original supporting cast is no longer with us:

“We’re working on it. We finally got some traction with Warner Bros. They have new leadership, my man Mike DeLuca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first Friday and Players Club and All About the Benjamins. Mike DeLuca was there.

So, now he’s running Warner Bros. And him and my man Michael Gruber was like, ‘Yo, what the f— is going on with Friday? Man, let’s get this s— back online’.

You know, I was a little hot because they had took so long. John Witherspoon passed away, [Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister Jr.] passed away, [Anthony ‘AJ’ Johnson] passed away. I’m like, ‘Man, we keep losing people, and y’all keep d—ing around, not doing the movie the way it needed to be done.

They wanna do it, but the key is, it’s got to be done right or we shouldn’t f— with it. So, they finally came to their senses, so hopefully we can get in the process of getting that movie made.”

All three Fridays came in on tight budgets of $3.5 million for the original and $10 million for each of the sequels. They’ve generated a total of over $121 million in box-office, only a tiny percentage of which was outside the United States. The first was the only one to score good reviews.
